German Photographer Michael Lange has just published a beautiful book: “wald” - check it out!

“The forest is the setting for myths and fairy tales and has been a favorite subject in art and literature from time immemorial. Over a period of three years, Michael Lange (*1953 in Heidelberg) wandered through Germany’s vast deciduous and coniferous forests, taking pictures with a sure sense of the places where childhood memories and sober documentations of nature blur. The mysterious photographs were taken off the beaten path, in the thickets and underbrush, at dusk or twilight. What was decisive for the cycle was the question of how the nature of stillness can be depicted in an image. The finest of nuances, shadows, and color gradients create thickly atmospheric compositions of concentrated clarity, conveying an experience characterized by the German Romantic word Waldeinsamkeit (woodland solitude). This publication traces the artist’s photographic tracks.”

I love their work and this large format black and white series of girls in the suburbs of European cities is so sublime in it’s simplicity. Beautiful portraits..

Argentinian photographer who just won this years Sony World Press Photo Award for his beautiful long time exposures of people at night. He uses moonlight and lets his models stand still for about 10 minutes and fills in with torches, flashes and lanterns.

The project I am currently working on is about the feeling of lost unity. I believe this starts right after we pop out of our mothers womb, when really all we want to do is crawl back inside and be one again. I think the very same feeling is consciously or unconsciously causing pain for many of us living in urban environments. I have felt this alienation from nature very strongly ever since I moved to the United States.

In my current project “take me home” I am working with mainly nude models in harsh urban environments that have hardly any nature. I want to show the contrast of organic body and artificial landscape as well as the vulnerability of our human form. We don’t belong here. We need nature. I know I do.

And another facet of this longing for reunification might be a feeling of home-sickness, that roots very deep in my consciousness and barely ever surfaces.

We’ll see where this takes me.

“Rivers and Tides” - a documentary about Scottish land artist Andrew Goldsworthy. Beautiful and fascinating to see how he works with nature. His photographs don’t really do his work justice that is so much based on the movement and flow of things in nature. In the movie that becomes very apparent.

A special on American Photographer Stefan Ruiz, former creative director of “Colors” and one of my photo-heros. Still shooting with a 4x5 Technica on film his studio-lit on location portraits are proof that even today film has it’s place in the world of photography. Truly inspiring.
